"Got Rock?" vs "Got Soul?"
September 17, 2009
Ten years ago, the naming of a Memphis tourist attraction set the political platform for a debate which would play itself out on the shelves of the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum's two gift shops at the musem and the Memphis International Airport, as well as online. Fulfilling the demand for gift shop selection, and drawing from the popular and oft repeated "Got Milk?" campaign, Rock 'n' Soul's Director of Programming, Pam Hetsel Parham, who envisions and stocks the gift shop merchandise, created the popular "Got Rock?" and "Got Soul?" baseball caps.
"It simply provided customers with a choice," said Parham, "as well as an apparel item which featured the museum on the back, but not necessarily emblazoned on the front. Customers love 'em, and, obviously, to play off of the name of the museum, we created both 'rock' and 'soul' options." Then came the in-store antics as customers ponder each, purchase both, and establish intriguing buying trends.
Just since the items were introduced in the stores and the online store, close to a thousand have been sold, and inventory records reveal the campaign results, thus far. "The purchases are amazingly close," said Lora Tate, Rock 'n' Soul gift shop employee. "You'll often see a customer purchase one of each for themselves or one as a gift for one grandchild and the other as a gift for their second grandchild. Couples will often split, with one buying 'rock' and the other buying 'soul.'"
Actually, inventory reveals that "Got Soul?" hats hold a slight advantage at about 57% of all purchases, while "Got Rock?" is coming on strong at 43%. More ladies purchase "Got Soul?," while men migrate more towards "Got Rock?"
Fortunately, in this great democratic country, the freedom to choose is still yours. Both (or either) are available by clicking here.
