Big Star Box Set Released This Tuesday

Not only was the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum pleased to be a part of Ardent Studios' 40th anniversary celebration in 2006 (which landed us the generous loan of one of the orginal sound boards from early Ardent studios, now occupying the museum's "Beat Goes On" gallery), the museum is also pleased that Ardent's 40th anniversary "house cleaning" unearthed the new materials that lead to a new Big Star box set. "Keep An Eye On the Sky" is a 4-disc, 98-song retrospective from the 70s Memphis band...

There Was None Better Than Jim Dickinson

Memphis music and the world lost a giant yesterday, as legendary producer and Memphis-music icon Jim Dickinson passed away. Every single day (361 days of the year), one of the first voices a staff member at the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum hears is that of Jim Dickinson, recorded and presented forever on the introductory video which welcomes guests to the museum about the origins and explosion of Memphis music and its impact on the world, as researched and told (and in this case with Mr....

Rock 'n' Soul Mourns the Loss of Les Paul

The Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum mourns the loss of a musical legend. Les Paul, who invented the solid-body electric guitar later wielded by a legion of rock 'n' roll greats, died today of complications from pneumonia. He was 94. For many years, the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum had the privilege of occupying a space inside Memphis' downtown Gibson Guitar Factory, where the legendary Les Paul guitars were built by hand.

Beale Street Flippers on "America's Got Talent" Tonight

Memphis' incredible "Beale Street Flippers" are on NBC's "America's Got Talent" tonight. Yeah, the show may be a bit cheesy, but these guys are hugely talented. And they WORKED their way into the spotlight. For years they have performed their acrobatics just outside the museum's front doors on legendary Beale Street and at Memphis Grizzlies games at FedExForum. Tune in tonight and watch them... you'll be blown away... then call in tonight and vote for these guys!

Rock 'n' Soul Mourns Loss of Billy Lee Riley

The Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum joins the rest of the world in mourning the loss of musical legend and Sun Records pioneer Billy Lee Riley. The rockabilly pioneer who's performed at the Rock 'n' Soul Museum and, in 2007, at the Beale Street Music Festival passed away Sunday, August 2, following a bout with cancer. In addition to his 1957 single "Flying Saucers Rock and Roll" and serving, along with Roland Janes and J.M. Van Eaton, as one of the premier backup bands for many Sun Records...

Exhibition Song List

My wife and I visited your museum a couple of weeks ago and loved it. We both learned a tremendous amount. However, we were both dying to know if there's a way to get a copy of the list of artists and songs on all the jukeboxes throughout the museum. You provide more music than one could possibly listen to in one visit (a good thing!) and we left there eager to get a copy of the list so we can start seeking some of it out, but the employees said no copies of the list are available. I would have...

Great music continues to be made within those four legendary walls on Union Avenue, as well as at other great Memphis studios like Ardent Studios, Royal Studios and others which all keep great musical talent coming to town.

The Greatest Entertainer of All Time

I have so much respect for Barry Gordy, the man who built Motown Records into the international icon it is, and who has done more for the city of Detroit than any sports or political legend. His eloquent comments at the July 7 memorial service for the great Michael Jackson caught my ear, as he referred to the "King of Pop" as the "greatest entertainer of all time." Not an outrageous claim, by any means. Fortunately, whether you believe it or not, it makes you think about the many great musical...

Remembering Koko Taylor

The Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum, like the rest of the world, was shocked and saddened on June 3 with the news of the death of blues legend and "Queen of the Blues," Koko Taylor. Not even a month had passed since her final performance, right here in Memphis, Tennessee, May 7 at the Blues Music Awards. Little did any of us know that her roof-shaking performance of "Wang Dang Doodle" would become a final, yet very special musical gift to each and every one of us, and just how appropriate was The...
